Vishwanathan Anand was born on 11 December 1969 in Chennai. His first teacher was his mother, who taught him the basics of chess. He became the National Chess Champion of India at the age of 16. Anand went on to become India’s first Grandmaster and later a World Chess Champion. He has been honoured with awards such as the Padma Shri, the Arjuna Award, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.
