Solution
Population growth can be controlled through family planning, education and awareness, access to contraception, delayed and planned childbearing, and reproductive-health services.
Three contraceptive mechanisms
- Barrier methods: Condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps physically prevent sperm from meeting the ovum. Condoms also help reduce the risk of STDs.
- Hormonal methods: Oral pills, injections or implants alter hormonal cycles and can inhibit ovulation; pills may also inhibit implantation.
- Surgical sterilisation: Vasectomy blocks the vas deferens, while tubectomy blocks the fallopian tubes. Both prevent gamete transport and are generally intended as permanent methods.
Sustainable population control requires informed family planning and access to effective reproductive-health services, not food production alone.
