Solution
India’s three biodiversity hotspots
- Western Ghats
- Indo-Burma
- Eastern Himalayas
These regions contain varied habitats and high concentrations of endemic species. They are rich in flowering plants and animal groups such as amphibians, reptiles, butterflies and some mammals. The Eastern Himalayas also have temperate forests and many endemic plants; the Western Ghats are notable for endemic amphibians.
Importance:
Hotspots are both exceptionally rich in biodiversity and highly threatened. Their endemic species may be lost globally if their habitats disappear. Protecting these regions therefore conserves unique species, habitats and genetic resources, and helps prevent extinction.
