Major tropical and subtropical hot deserts of the world include the Sahara (North Africa), the Arabian Desert (including the Rub' al Khali) and the Syrian Desert (Middle East), the Thar Desert (India/Pakistan), the Iranian deserts such as Dasht-e Lut and Dasht-e Kavir, the Namib and Kalahari deserts (southern Africa), the Atacama (western South America) and other very arid Andean coastal regions, the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts in North America, and the large Australian deserts such as the Great Victoria, Great Sandy, Gibson and Simpson; these deserts are generally found in the tropics and subtropics (roughly between about 15° and 30° north and south) and are characterized by very low rainfall, high evaporation and extreme daytime heat.
