(i) When ammonia dissolves in water.

\[\ce{NH3 + H2O -> NH4OH}\]

\[\ce{NH4OH <=> NH+4 + OH-}\]

Ions formed are ammonium and hydroxyl.

(ii) Test:

\[\ce{NH4OH + HCl/Cl2 -> \underset{(White fumes)}{NH4Cl} + H2O}\]
