Solution

  1. Low Growth Rate of the Economy: Until the 1980s, India’s economic growth rate remained constantly low due to underutilization of natural resources, technology, and entrepreneurial ability. This led to low productive capacity and a low level of per capita income, resulting in mass poverty.
  2. Fast Population Growth among the Poor: The rapid population growth, particularly among the poor, has contributed significantly to poverty. Many poor people either are ignorant of or do not use birth control measures, leading to large family sizes. This fast population growth reduces per capita income and thereby lowers the standard of living substantially.
  3. Illiteracy: Lack of education restricts farmers from adopting modern methods and makes urban workers unskilled, lowering income and productivity.
