Solution
Sulphur compound pollutants, mainly sulphur dioxide, are released when coal and other fossil fuels are burnt in powerhouses, industries and vehicles. They harm plants by causing chlorosis and necrosis, and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract in humans. In the atmosphere, sulphur dioxide dissolves in rainwater to form sulphuric acid, causing acid rain. Acid rain damages soil, forests and aquatic life, and corrodes buildings and structures.
