A match referee is an official appointed to supervise professional cricket matches. After the match, the referee assesses the pitch condition, assigns a rating, and forwards the rating to the ICC.

During play, the match referee stays off the field and watches the game from a designated spectator area. They do not make decisions that affect the match’s play or outcome; those responsibilities belong solely to the appointed umpires. After every match, the referee prepares and submits a report to the ICC, noting any incidents involving players or umpires that may raise concerns under the Code of Conduct or the Laws of Cricket. Match referees are often former cricketers with notable playing careers.
