Solution
In modern field hockey, the term referee is not used. According to the latest FIH rules, the game is conducted by umpires and technical officials to ensure smooth play. The five main duties of an umpire are:
- Before the match, the umpire must check the markings of the field, the goalposts, flags, and other necessary arrangements.
- In case of a dispute, the umpire may consult the other umpire or sometimes the technical officials before giving a decision.
- The umpire can check or measure any equipment either on his own or at the request of a team captain.
- During the match, both umpires carry out their duties in proper coordination with each other.
- After the match, the umpire reviews the game situations and discusses them with the technical team for better coordination in future.
