Serve: This is the stroke used to begin play. In tennis, a serve, also called a service, is the shot that starts a point. It is performed by tossing the ball upward and striking it so that it lands in the diagonally opposite service box without touching the net. The serve can be delivered either underhand or overhand. The server must stand behind the baseline and is allowed two attempts to place the ball into the correct service court. The first serve of a match is taken from the right side of the court, after which players alternate sides for each subsequent serve.
