In contemporary India, women have successfully shattered traditional gender roles and are actively involved in every major professional sector. They occupy high-ranking leadership positions as corporate executives, software engineers, space scientists at organizations like ISRO, commercial airline pilots, and administrative officers in the IAS and IPS. Furthermore, their presence is rapidly growing in field-based roles such as law enforcement, journalism, agricultural management, and various tiers of the Indian judicial system, proving that no professional sector remains entirely closed to them.

Legally and formally, women are no longer barred from entering any educational field or training academy in India. A major historical barrier was removed when the National Defence Academy (NDA) opened undergraduate military training admissions to female candidates, followed by the inclusion of girls in Sainik Schools across the country. Additionally, landmark Supreme Court rulings granting women Permanent Commissions mean that advanced leadership and command-level educational tracks within the military are now legally open to female officers.

However, despite these legal advancements, practical or structural restrictions still persist in specific specialized arenas. Within the Indian Armed Forces, women are still largely excluded from direct frontline ground combat roles, specifically in the Infantry and the Armoured Corps, thereby limiting their access to corresponding tactical combat education. Outside the military, informal barriers such as societal pressure, safety concerns regarding remote locations, and traditional gender expectations continue to steer women away from specific technical fields like mining engineering or heavy industrial operations.
