Solution
My mother tongue is Hindi. While Standard Hindi (Khari Boli) is used in schools, news, and official administration, the language encompasses a massive “dialect continuum” across Northern and Central India.
Known Dialects and Approximate Speaker Base:
- Bhojpuri: Spoken by 50+ million people primarily in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It retains a massive oral and cinematic tradition.
- Awadhi: Spoken by 3.5 to 5 million people in Central Uttar Pradesh. It is historically famous for classical epics like the Ramcharitmanas.
- Braj Bhasha: Spoken by 1.5 to 2 million people around Mathura and Agra. It is now mostly limited to rural folks and traditional devotional poetry.
- Haryanvi/Bangru: Spoken by 8 to 10 million people in Haryana and surrounding Delhi outskirts.
Insights from Grandparents’ Generation
Consultations with my grandparents reveal that during their youth, regional dialects were the primary means of daily communication at home and within local communities. Standard formal Hindi (Khari Boli) was strictly reserved for school education, official government writing, and reading newspapers.
