Solution
The following are the drawbacks of Darwinism:
- Darwin could not explain the origin of variations or how they arise. He failed to distinguish between environmental and hereditary variations.
- Darwin did not differentiate between somatic and germinal variations. He mistakenly considered all variations as heritable.
- Darwin’s theory lacked clarity on how new characters arose or how the “arrival of the fittest” occurred. He didn’t explain how advantageous traits were inherited.
- Darwin believed in gradual evolution, but he didn’t recognize intermediate forms. He also couldn’t explain species extinction or vestigial organs.
- Darwin couldn’t explain neutral traits or hybrid sterility. He also overlooked the hindrance caused by over-specialized organs like tusks and antlers.
