Solution

The total area of the floor = 5 m × 3 m = 15 m2

The area covered with tiles = `40 xx 1/16 m^2 = 5/2 m^2`

∴ The non tiled area = `[15 - 5/2] m^2`

= `[(30 - 5)/2] m^2`

= `25/2 m^2`

∴ The required ratio = `("Tiled area")/("Non tiled area")`

= `(5/2 m^2)/(25/2 m^2)`

= `5/2 xx 2/25`

= `1/5`

= 1 : 5
