A mirage is usually seen:
- On hot days, especially in deserts or on tar roads
- When the ground is very hot, and the air just above it is warmer than the air higher up
- This temperature difference causes light to bend (refraction), creating the illusion of water
One more example:
The twinkling of stars is another example caused by refraction of light in the Earth’s atmosphere.
