Question

In the following questions, two statements (i) and (ii) are given. Choose the valid statement.

  1. The smallest whole number is 1.
  2. 5x + 3 ≥ 11, x ∈ N gives x = {2, 3, 4, 5, ...}.

Options

  • Only (ii)

  • Both (i) and (ii)

  • Neither (i) nor (ii)

Solution

Only (ii)

Explanation:

(i) is false, the smallest whole number is 0 (whole numbers = {0, 1, 2, ...}).

(ii) Solve 5x + 3 ≥ 11

5x ≥ 8

`x ≥ 8/5`

= 1.6

 so for x ∈ N the solutions are x = 2, 3, 4, …, which is correct.
