Given: Triangle ABC with DE || BC, AD = 3 cm, BD = 4 cm, AC = 14 cm.

Step-wise calculation:

1. By the Basic Proportionality (Thales) Theorem, since DE || BC we have `(AD)/(AB) = (AE)/(AC)`.

2. Compute AB = AD + DB

= 3 + 4

= 7 cm

3. `(AD)/(AB) = 3/7`.

4. `AE = AC xx (AD)/(AB)`

= `14 xx 3/7` 

= `(14 xx 3)/7` 

= 6 cm
