Solution

India lost the war in 1962. After gaining territory, China declared a ceasefire, withdrew from some areas, and held Aksai Chin. This severely damaged the Congress Party and its leaders:

  1. Nehru's image damaged: Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister and head of the Congress, trusted China (“Hindi-Chini bhai-bhai”), but the war proved to be a fiasco, damaging Nehru’s reputation. He was held accountable for his inadequate planning, disregard for army warnings, and incorrect policies. He passed away in 1964 as his health failed. Many claimed that the battle had mentally destroyed him.
  2. Criticism in party and Parliament: Congress was heavily criticized in Parliament. Nehru was considered weak by the opposition. Some leaders are dissatisfied even within Congress. Krishna Menon, the minister of defense, resigned. As a powerful leader, Nehru lost a lot of respect.
  3. Congress weakened politically: Congress became weaker politically as a result of the war, which exposed India’s military weakness. People began to doubt Congress’s foreign policy (non-alignment appeared to have failed). Opposition grew as a result. Congress performed poorly in numerous states during the 1967 elections.
  4. Shift in leadership: Lal Bahadur Shastri became prime minister in 1964 following Nehru. Congress adopted a more practical approach, strengthening the army and reducing dependence on China. Congress became more realistic in defense after the war.
