Solution

In figure, two circles of radii 7 cm each are shown. ABCD is a rectangle and AD and BC are the radii. The area of the shaded region is 21 cm2.

Explanation:

Given:

Radius of each circle = 7 cm

AB = 7 + 7 = 14 cm

AD = BC = 7 cm

Area of rectangle ABCD

= AB × AD

= 14 × 7

= 98 cm2

Each sector is a quadrant.

Area of two quadrants

= `2 xx (90^circ)/(360^circ) xx πr^2`

= `2 xx 1/4 xx 22/7 xx 7 xx 7`

= 77 cm2

Area of shaded region

= Area of rectangle – Area of two quadrants

= 98 – 77

= 21 cm2

The area of the shaded region is 21 cm2.
