Solution

In ΔABC, sides AB and AC are extended to D and E respectively, such that AB = BD and AC = CE. If BC = 6 cm, then DE = 12 cm.

Explanation:

Since AB = BD and AC = CE, B and C are midpoints of AD and AE respectively. In triangle ADE the segment joining midpoints B and C is parallel to DE and equals half its length (midpoint theorem).

Therefore DE = 2 × BC

= 2 × 6

= 12 cm
