Then, according to the question,

y = 5x  ...(i)

And y – x = 48  ...(ii)

Substituting the value of y from equation (i) to equation (ii) we get

5x – x = 48

4x = 48

x = `48/4` = 12

Substituting the value of x in equation (i) we get

y = 5 × 12 = 60

Thus x = 12 and y = 60

As a result, the numbers are 12 and 60.
