Solution

After Independence, most rulers signed the Instrument of Accession and joined the Indian Union. Their princely states were merged into larger administrative units, and the rulers lost their political authority. Initially, many received privy purses and retained their titles and personal properties. They then lived as private citizens: some entered politics, while others managed estates, businesses, hotels or charitable institutions. The privy purses and official recognition of former rulers were abolished in 1971. Thus, they gradually became ordinary citizens in a democratic republic.
