Around 4.6 billion years ago, a massive cloud of gas and dust, known as a solar nebula, collapsed under gravity. As it collapsed, it began to spin and flatten into a disc. The centre of this disc became hot and dense, forming the Sun, while the remaining material in the disc gradually came together through accretion to form the planets and other objects in our solar system.
