Solution

Chlorobenzene is reduced to benzene by treating it with Ni–Al alloy and aqueous sodium hydroxide. The nascent hydrogen generated in the reaction breaks the C–Cl bond and replaces it with hydrogen. This is a useful method for removing halogens from aromatic rings, known as reductive dehalogenation.
