The idea of democracy evolved gradually over time. In ancient India, institutions like the Sabha, Samiti and Bauddha Samghas allowed people to discuss issues and take collective decisions. During foreign rule, public participation was restricted, but the freedom struggle revived the demand for self-rule. After independence, the Constituent Assembly framed the Constitution, establishing India as a democratic republic based on liberty, equality, justice and fraternity. Today, democracy involves not only elections but also citizens’ participation, rights and active involvement in public life.
