Solution
The Earth maintains its heat budget by balancing the incoming solar radiation and the outgoing terrestrial radiation. Some incoming solar radiation is reflected back to space by clouds, dust, and ice, while some is absorbed by the atmosphere and Earth’s surface. The surface then radiates heat back as longwave terrestrial radiation. Much of this outgoing radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere, which heats up and in turn radiates heat back, keeping the Earth warm even at night. This continuous process of absorption and radiation between the Earth and atmosphere regulates temperature and prevents extreme temperature variations, maintaining the Earth’s heat balance.
