Solution
Plants with red leaves contain green chlorophyll just like normal green plants. However, they also possess a very high concentration of red and purple accessory pigments called anthocyanins or carotenoids. These red pigments mask (hide) the green color of the chlorophyll. The underlying chlorophyll still absorbs the necessary sunlight to carry out photosynthesis.
