Watson's friend of Holmes arrived and was horrified to see Holmes was ill. He wanted to treat Holmes. But Holmes did not allow Watson to examine him. Holmes did not want Watson to know that he was not ill. So, he sent Watson to call Mr. Culverton Smith who was in London. He instructed him to come before the arrival of Smith and hide in the next room. - Arrival of Smith:
Watson called Smith and asked him to come to meet Holmes. Mr. Culverton Smith came and saw Holmes lying on the bed. He confessed Smith that he only killed his nephew Victor Savage in order to retain his property. Holmes asked Smith to turn up the gas light. It was a signal for Inspector. - Conclusion:
Inspector Morton came inside and arrested Smith on the charges of killing his nephew and his attempt to kill Holmes in the same way. Thus, Watson understood all the matter happened around him.
