Solution

States and societies emerged and spread across the Indian subcontinent through the growth of agriculture, trade, population and settlements. Early communities gradually developed into janapadas and mahājanapadas, and powerful kingdoms and empires later expanded their territories. Rulers used armies, administration and taxation to govern larger areas. At the same time, trade, migration, cultural exchanges and the spread of religions such as Buddhism and Jainism helped connect different regions. In this way, states and societies gradually developed and spread to different parts of the Indian subcontinent.
