India has a federal system of government, where both the Union and State governments have their own legislatures and executives. At the Union level, the Parliament is bicameral, consisting of the Lok Sabha (Lower House) and Rajya Sabha (Upper House).

The Union executive includes the President as the Head of State, the Prime Minister as the Head of Government, and the Council of Ministers, which assists the Prime Minister in running the country. At the State level, the legislature may be unicameral, with only the Vidhan Sabha, or bicameral, with both the Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad. The State executive consists of the Governor as the Head of State, the Chief Minister as the Head of Government, and the Council of Ministers, which helps in managing the state.
