- Seed cotton is fed (after drying/cleaning) into the gin hopper.
- Rotating saw-rollers with sharp teeth pull the fibres (lint) through closely spaced ribs; the seeds are too large to pass and drop out separately.
- Rotating brushes strip the lint from the saw teeth, the lint is collected and compressed into bales, while the seeds are removed (often later crushed for oil and the cake used as fodder).
