Question

Given below are a few quotations on decision making. In groups of four, discuss whether you agree or disagree with the ideas. Give reasons.

1. The risk of a wrong decision is preferable to the terror of indecision. Maimonides
2. No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be. Isaac Asimov
3. Decisiveness is a characteristic of high-performing men and women. Almost any decision is better than no decision at all. Brian Tracy

Answer 1

1. I partly agree. Indecision can cause anxiety and prevent us from acting when action is needed. However, we should consider the facts and possible consequences before deciding, especially when the choice is serious.
2. I agree. A sensible decision should take present circumstances into account as well as likely future changes. Thinking ahead can help us avoid choices that solve an immediate problem but create larger ones later
3. I partly agree. Decisiveness helps people make progress and take responsibility. But not every decision is better than no decision: for important or irreversible choices, careful thought and advice may be wiser than acting in haste.
