Solution
Prey animals must constantly monitor their surroundings for potential predators. To survive, they must avoid or defend themselves against predators. They developed several adaptations to prevent predation.
- Camouflage: Camouflage refers to a species ability to blend in with its surroundings through adaptation. Many animals utilise this approach to blend into their surroundings. Animals apply colours, body shapes, and behaviours to confuse, distract, startle, or hide. Many frogs and insects use camouflage to escape predators.
- Highly developed senses: Prey animals typically use escape as a measure of protection. To identify predators, animals must have strong senses of sight, hearing, and smell, and time to flee.
- Warning Signals: Warning signals are used to deter predators and alert other animals. Some animals can be poisonous, have unpleasant tastes, or cause painful bites or stings. Many of these animals have vibrant colours and distinctive patterns. These colours act as a warning signal to predators. Skunks, for example, are known for their unpleasant smell when threatened.
- Defensive Weapons: Prey animals use adaptations to fight or avoid predators. Weapons can be physical (thorns, wings, hooves, teeth, claws, antlers) or chemical (e.g., snake venom).
