Solution

During silver plating on an iron object, a solution of sodium argento-cyanide Na[Ag(CN)2] is used as the electrolyte:

At Cathode (Iron article): Silver ions gain electrons and deposit as shiny metal.

\[\ce{Ag+ + e- -> Ag}\]

At Anode (Pure silver block): Silver atoms lose electrons to maintain the ion concentration in the solution.

\[\ce{Ag -. Ag+ + e-}\]
