Wind and ocean currents never move in a straight line because of the earth’s rotation, which causes the coriolis effect. This effect deflects the moving air and water to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. As a result, instead of flowing straight from high to low pressure or equator to poles, winds and currents curve, forming spirals and circular patterns. Additionally, the configuration of landmasses also blocks and redirects currents and winds, further preventing straight-line movement. Therefore, the combined influence of the earth’s rotation (coriolis effect) and the distribution of continents causes winds and ocean currents to follow curved paths rather than straight lines.
