Solution
India’s forest resources have fast depleted in recent years due to the following reasons:
- Expansion of Agriculture: The rapidly growing population has raised the demand for food, resulting in the conversion of large forest tracts into agricultural farmlands.
- Rapid Urbanisation and Infrastructure Development: Large sections of pristine forest are being removed on a constant basis to make way for roads, highways, railway lines, mining facilities and expanding cities.
- Overgrazing and Fuelwood Collection: Livestock grazing causes harm to young saplings and limits natural tree regeneration. Furthermore, rural communities rely significantly on cutting down forest trees for everyday fuel and cooking.
- Forest Fires: Frequent and uncontrolled forest fires destroy enormous areas of green cover, kill native wildlife, and deteriorate soil quality, making it impossible for the forest to recover organically.
- River Valley and Hydroelectric Projects: Large-scale dam construction submerges thousands of hectares of rich, low-lying river valley forests, causing permanent habitat loss.
