Questions
Give reasons for the following observations:
Physisorption decreases with increase in temperature.
Why does physisorption decrease with the increase of temperature?

Solution
Physisorption is exothermic in nature:
\[\ce{\underset{(Adsobent) (Adsobate)}{Solid + Gas}⇌\underset{(Gas adsorbed on solid)}{Gas/Solid + Heat}}\]
In accordance with Le Chatelier’s principle, physisorption decreases with an increase in temperature. Because the equilibrium will shift in the backward direction, gas will be released from the adsorbed surface.

Assertion: Detergents with low CMC are more economical to use.
Reason: Cleansing action of detergents involves the formation of micelles. These are formed when the concentration of detergents becomes equal to CMC.
