The children of the same parents, despite their similarities, are distinct in certain respects due to the random distribution of chromosomes during meiosis and genetic recombination. In the process of meiosis, the maternal and paternal chromosomes arbitrarily align and separate into distinct gametes. Different combinations of genes are transmitted to progeny as a consequence of this random assortment. In addition, the exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes during meiosis results in the formation of novel allele combinations through genetic recombination (crossing over). Genetic and phenotypic variation among siblings is a consequence of the fact that they inherit distinct combinations of genes from their parents.
