Solution
In the absence of greenhouse gases, the surface temperature of the earth is maintained as from the sun the heat radiations reach the earth and are absorbed and retained here.
Some of the absorbed radiations are reflected back into the atmosphere. Hence, balance is maintained between heat energy absorbed by the earth and radiated from the earth.
