The Central Government settled the immigration issue in Assam by passing the Illegal Immigrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act (IM-DT) in 1983. This Act was a response to the demands raised during the Assam Agitation (1979-1985) led by AASU (All Assam Students' Union). The law was designed to identify illegal immigrants who had entered Assam, particularly from Bangladesh, and provided a framework for their detection, disenfranchisement, and deportation.
The government also addressed the issue through the Assam Accord signed in 1985, which was a significant step in resolving the conflict. The Accord provided that immigrants who entered Assam after January 1, 1966, would be excluded from the electoral rolls, and their names would be removed, while also ensuring the protection of Assamese culture and identity. Thus, the immigration issue was partly resolved through legal measures and the signing of the Assam Accord.
