The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was founded in 1927 by Sir Dorabji Tata, with the support of Dr A.G. Noehren. Tata became its Founder President and Dr Noehren its Secretary General. It is the apex sports body in India and is affiliated with or recognises national sports federations.
Duties:
- To select and prepare Indian sportspersons for international competitions.
- To organise and control Indian teams participating in Olympic and other IOC-sponsored Games.
- To decide the organisation of the National Games.
- To maintain liaison between the Government of India and sports federations.
- To protect and enforce amateur rules for sportspersons.
- To promote and develop the Olympic Movement in India.
- To enforce the rules and regulations of the IOC.
- To promote physical, moral and cultural education of the youth.
