Solution

Sulphur dioxide reacts with limited NaOH (1 : 1 molar ratio) to form sodium bisulphite.

\[\ce{SO2 + NaOH -> Na2SO3 + H2O}\]

Sulphur dioxide reacts with excess NaOH (2 : 1 molar ratio) to form sodium sulphite.

\[\ce{SO2 + 2NaOH -> Na2SO3 + H2O}\]
