- Air exhaled through the nose causes a backflow of air into the lungs because the nostrils are smaller than the mouth.
- The lungs have more time to draw oxygen from the air we have previously inhaled because we exhale more slowly through the nose than through the mouth.
- The vestibule, or hairs inside the nostrils, filters out dust and bacteria from the air that is inhaled, allowing only clean air to pass through.
- As the air enters our body, it becomes warmer and more humid in our nostrils (conditioner).
- Smell can be detected by olfactory chambers.
