Squealer declared that Snowball was no better than a criminal. Snowball's part in the Battle of the Cowshed was exaggerated.

Building the windmill was Napoleon's idea. The plan that Snowball had drawn on the floor had actually been stolen from among Napoleon's papers. It was said that Snowball caused the windmill to fall in sheer malignity to avenge himself for his expulsion. The traitor had crept under the cover of night and destroyed the windmill. Snowball had come from the direction of the Foxwood Farm.
         It was declared that Snowball was secretly visiting the farm under the cover of darkness and made all kinds of mischief like stealing corn, upsetting milk pails, breaking eggs, trampling seed-beds, and gnawing the bark of the fruit trees. Whenever anything went wrong, it was attributed to Snowball. If a window was broken or a drain blocked, one of the animals would surely blame it on Snowball and when the key of the storage shed was lost, all of the farms were convinced that Snowball had thrown it in the well. They went on believing this even after the store key was found under a sack of cornmeal. The cows now claimed that Snowball crept into their sheds and milked them in their sleep and the rats were said to be in league with Snowball.
        Now, Napoleon claimed that he could smell traces of Snowball almost everywhere. Squealer called them together and reported that Snowball had sold himself to Frederick of Pinchfield Farm, and was plotting to attack the animals. Snowball was in league with Jones from the very beginning. He was Jone's secret agent.
Four pigs who [falsely] confessed to keeping in touch with Snowball was executed by the dogs. The hens who said Snowball had told them to rebel were also killed. In this manner, Snowball was painted as a traitor.
