Well irrigation is a popular means of irrigation in Northern India.

Well irrigation is confined mainly to the alluvial plains where owing to the soft nature of the soil, wells can be easily dug and the yield of crops from the land after irrigation is considerably high. The construction of wells is economically within easy reach for most farmers. The areas where well irrigation is practised include Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
