Solution

Mechanically formed sedimentary rocks are also termed as stratified rocks because they are formed by the deposition of sediments in water bodies like rivers, lakes, and seas. These sediments, such as sand, silt, and clay, settle in horizontal layers over time. As more sediments accumulate, the weight of the upper layers compresses the lower layers, squeezing out water and air. This process, called compaction and cementation, hardens the layers into solid rock. Because this formation happens in distinct, visible layers or strata, these rocks are known as stratified rocks. Each layer may differ in composition, thickness, and colour, clearly showing the history of deposition over time.
