Solution
Venus is hotter than Mercury because it has a thick atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide (CO2), which creates an extreme greenhouse effect. This thick atmosphere traps heat, preventing it from escaping back into space. As a result, Venus experiences surface temperatures that are higher than those of Mercury, despite being farther from the Sun. Mercury, on the other hand, has almost no atmosphere, so it cannot trap heat and experiences extreme temperature fluctuations.
