Solution
The Malabar coast is located on the western side of the Western Ghats, which acts as a barrier to the moisture-laden winds coming from the Arabian Sea and causes heavy rainfall in the region. Coromandel coast during this time remains comparatively dry because it is located parallel to the Bay of Bengal branch of the south-west monsoon. Further, it lies in the rain shadow area of the Arabian Sea branch of the south-west monsoon.
