Solution

Scoliosis is a postural deformity in which the spine shows an abnormal sideways curvature or rotation. The curve may be C-shaped with one curve or S-shaped with two curves. It commonly occurs between the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine.

The main signs of scoliosis include:

  1. Uneven shoulder blades or shoulders.
  2. Uneven hips and waist.
  3. The back leans to one side.
  4. The head may not be centred over the pelvis.
  5. One leg may appear longer than the other.

Scoliosis is common among young people, especially teenagers. In about 80% of cases, the cause is unknown (idiopathic). It may also be associated with inherited factors or uneven development of the back muscles, bones and soft tissues following radiation treatment. The severity is measured by the degree of spinal curvature.
