From a rectangular sheet of metal 48 cm by 36 cm, a square with side 8 cm is cut off from each of its corners. An open box is made of the remaining sheet. Find the volume of the box.

Solution

Given: Length = 48 cm

Breadth = 36 cm

(For rectangle)

Also, from each corner, a square of side 8 cm is cut off and an open box is made from the remaining sheet.


Hence, the box appears like this:


Dimensions of the open cuboidal box are

l = 48 – 8 – 8 = 32 cm,

b = 36 – 8 – 8 = 20 cm,

h = 8 cm

∴ Volume of cuboid (box) = l × b × h

= 32 × 20 × 8

= 5120 cm3
